In recognition of Energy Month, the Barbados Light and Power (BL&P) will host an educational series on the island’s move towards a secure and cleaner future.

The theme for Energy Month 2020 is A Resilient Community: Energy at the Centre. BL&P will embark on a series of information-sharing on safety as well as developments in Barbados’ energy environment.

BL&P managing director, Roger Blackman has expressed that safety was “number one” in their operations.

“Safety is deeply ingrained in all we do at Light & Power and, as our business evolves to meet the demands of an increasingly engaged public, so too do our safety practices,” he remarked.

“Our employees are equipped with the know-how and personal protective equipment to work safely every day. Their belief in, and respect for, safety as job number one across our operations is steadfast. The same approach to safety is brought to bear in the development and commissioning of new, innovative clean energy solutions and all of the advancements we are making in our business,” Blackman continued.

The rapid development of new technologies, public awareness, and demand, and an increasingly connected world are a few of the factors contributing to a quickly changing energy environment.

The Government of Barbados is leading the way in setting targets for becoming a carbon-neutral nation in the next decade, lowering fossil fuel use and greatly reducing carbon emissions. BL&P has been actively working towards these ambitious targets through its evolution from carbon-based energy generation to renewable sources such as solar and wind.

Speaking on Government’s plan to operate on renewable energy by 2030, Blackman maintained that the BL&P was committed to achieving this goal.

“Rapid change is required if we are to achieve Barbados’ ambitious plan, and an unwavering commitment to safety is integral to our continued success,” said the managing director.

He added: “It’s an exciting and challenging time in our history as a nation. With the skill and commitment of the Light & Power team working every day on a foundation of safe work practices, we will lead the way to a clean energy future for Barbados.”
